Ethics application from 3 institutions
In order to conduct surveys and focus groups among students and staff, ethical approval is required in all three institutions. DIT, ITB and ITTD each have marginally different processes to obtain ethical approval. In addition, the Ethics Committees of each institution meet at different times. Three applications were prepared in parallel across the colleges.
Although the application processes differ, they mainly include:
- outlining the project aims
- assessing any risk for participants or researchers
- ensuring that participants are adequately informed about the study
- identifying any conflicts of interest
- ensuring adequate care is taken of sensitive data
- ensuring that minors are given adequate protection
At present, two institutions are awaiting ethical approval. We are confident that we can meet the ethical requirements of each college and that approval will be forthcoming within a number of weeks.
